.
Whilst I've always voted Labor, and I was able to articulate my distrust of Mr Abbott, I was not readily able to say why I would be voting FOR Labor.
So I went away and thought seriously about my motivations.
It wasn't as hard as I first thought. And there were many really good reasons.
I'm voting Labor because I want my nephew to have a world class education and access to affordable childcare.
I'm voting Labor because my Mum works in the childcare industry and I believe only Labor will look after her interests.
I'm voting Labor because my brother and his fiancee are both Public Servants (and I live in QLD and have seen what Newman has done to the QLD Public Service in his time as Premier).
No argument that PM Abbott would be a nightmare, but more importantly he won't implement any of the things that really matter to me. I think we should all take the time to reflect on finishing the following statement: "I'm voting Labor because..."
We've had enough negativity, and while most of it has come from the Abbott camp, we have (as a Nation) unfortunately been drawn into it. We need to re-focus on a simple, powerful and positive message... what matters to me and my Nation... and to contrast the negativity from the Conservatives. It's not enough to just call it out for what it is.
For me:
I'm voting Labor because the NDIS helps the disabled in my community
I'm voting Labor because pension payments are now fair and decent because of a Labor Government
I'm voting Labor because 900 000 jobs have been created in the last 5 years.
I'm voting Labor because they'll ensure we have a fair and equitable taxation system
I'm voting Labor because they established Superannuation for everyone and they'll keep it equitable and not a tax haven for the rich
Rightly or Wrongly, our Prime Minister is on the nose. Many people have indicated that they are willing to vote against Gillard, without considering that they are actually voting for Abbott. Voting for Abbott is more than a protest vote against Gillard... it is a vote for a very different country.
I'm voting Labor because I love this country and want to see its continued growth and prosperity.
I'm voting Labor because I believe in the integrity and leadership of our current government (not in the politics of personality)
Now is the time to think about who you are voting FOR, but more importantly... why?
And once we know why, we should be telling anyone who'll listen.
