So much for the conservative mantra of protecting the rights of individuals and freedom of expression... not when it gets in the way of a base political outcome. And so much for Tony Abbott not wanting to interfere in the business of the States... the qualification being unless there is also a base political outcome in it for him and his failing government.
The right are already better resourced and already massively outspend the left during election campaigns. This decision ensures that the playing field doesn't become even more uneven and is a victory for democracy.
There is a separate challenge to Queensland legislation which demands a vote of members if a union want to donate $10,000 or more, which is due to be heard by the High Court next year. Given the track record of A-G Bleijie in having to constantly redraft poorly written legislation, the chances of this piece of political manipulation standing up to high court scrutiny seems extremely low.
It will be interesting to see if State and Federal tax dollars are likewise wasted on protecting attempts at political manipulation in Queensland.
The Tory's have perhaps learned a valuable lesson... the High Court isn't just for taking away people's rights.. like the recent ACT same sex challenge. The High Court also acts to protect the rights of individuals.
A victory for the people!
