Mundingburra is a winnable seat with recent polling showing that along with the Newman government, David Cristafulli is also on the nose. A big margin gained at the last state election is seemingly as tenuous as leads previously enjoyed by the LNP in the seats of Stafford and Redcliffe. And we all know how big and unprecedented those swings were.
Rather than the by-election results being protest votes unlikely to be repeated, there is a great deal to suggest that the Newman government is in real danger of being one term... well not wonders.. but disasters. Their performance so far has clearly been so utterly dysfunctional that 'Shambles' Newman is already attempting backflips.
But for Tony Fitzgerald, a man who remained staunchly independent and apolitical for decades, there is good reason to again step into the public domain, proclaiming Campbell's mea-culpa as his latest political stunt and that:
'For the moment, at least, it's transparently clear that the government doesn't really regret its actions or intend to change its behaviour.
We believe that Queenslanders hold a similar opinion to Tony Fitzgerald in relation to our lamentable state government.
Coralee's engagement team who door-knocked through Vincent came across a variety of people with varying attitudes, concerns, political leanings and interests in relation to the up-coming state election. What was remarkably consistent was how well the group were received. And while there were still a significant number of residents who were still uncommitted in their voting intentions (not surprising this far out from a poll), an equally significant number were to committed to 'Anyone but the LNP'.
Very bad news for Campbell and Cristafulli.
The LNP are bleeding support nationwide and in Qld at least is facing the prospect of the double whammy of a deeply unpopular party at state and federal level. The task of winning could be compared to pushing a wheelbarrow full of Tony Abbott promises uphill..
No matter what promises the LNP make (or change), no matter how much money they spend on advertising.., Labor will continue door knocking, will continue meeting with locals, will keep listening to their concerns, and building a first rate policy platform. We will continue to put the interests of people ahead of the interests of corporations.
There is a stark difference between Labor and the LNP and we will be out in the community communicating that. Our experiences in Vincent have shown that people are starting to see that more clearly than they did in 2012.
The winds of change are blowing in North Queensland, and right across the state.
