It has been argued that ownership, or even bias, is not the issue. We all have a bias (of which we are mostly blind), and as much as any media organisation tries (or creates the impression it is trying) to provide balance it will always fall short. The important thing from the perspective of the public is to be aware of that bias and adjust their reaction to what they are reading or seeing accordingly. It is also important to have access to a wide range of opinions.
While we do have Media Watch who look out for poor standards of journalism, we don't currently have presenters like Jon Stewart who provide a counter-balance to our right-leaning media. Stewart is particularly effective when he has his sights set on Fox News in the US or the Republicans. His bias is clear and his insights are both funny and revealing.
