Labor's candidate for Herbert had an opinion piece published in the Townsville bulletin recently, which set what is a nice tone for the year. It also highlights the positive approach that Cathy brings to everything she does.

The start of a New Year is always filled with hope and optimism and reading this article indicated to me that families and industry in Townsville have much to be hopeful about as our economy is set to strengthen and grow as we launch into 2013.
It is clear that Federal Labor committed to ensuring that Townsville continues to thrive and expand as Queensland’s second capital.
We have much to be grateful for in Australia and particularly in Townsville and it is important as we move into the New Year that we continue to stay positive and focus on our strengths and prosperity.
Townsville is one of seven Solar Cities across Australia, part of the Australian Government’s Solar Cities Program that works with all levels of government, industry and community to change the way we think about and use energy.
Townsville values our increasing number of Defence personnel and families all of whom contribute in a meaningful way to our community, economy and national security.
Our new RSL stadium is second to none in the country; this facility has been designed to meet the needs of a growing community and not just in the area of sport.
Recently the Stadium was utilised for the Federal Government’s very successful North Queensland Job Expo where thousands of people came through the doors.
It is also fantastic to see Townsville recognised as a centre of excellence in sustainability research, we are taking an international leadership role in this vital area.
Wellbeing plays a vital role in communities and it is heartening to note that Australia ranks in the top five countries in the world when measured against the Better Life Index, which is drawn from issues such as housing, education, income, employment, social supports, environment, civic engagement, health, safety, life satisfaction and work–life balance.
The Australian economy, since the GFC, has over and over again been ranked as second to none within the OECD.
Since Labor came to office, Australia has achieved a stable AAA credit rating from all major credit rating agencies, this is an achievement never reached during the Howard years.
Our economy is now 11% larger than 2007 despite the GFC.
With the negative economic impact on North Queensland of the recent decisions of the new Queensland Government it is too easy to always be negative.
I will continue to work hard to ensure accountability for what the Liberal/Nationals said before the election, however with the New Year it is timely to reflect on the many positive achievements of Townsville.
Everyone should join together in 2013 to make sure that Townsville continues to grow and prosper into the future, the Gillard Government and I are committed to this cause.
Happy New Year.
Cathy O’Toole
Labor Candidate for Herbert
