Does the Premier not realise he could at any moment become a person living with a disability, as on average, every 30 minutes someone in Australia is diagnosed with a significant disability.
It is outrageous that Queensland is not leading the way with a trial site in this very important initiative; instead the Premier has put Queensland in the category of “shirking responsibility for the disabled” as stated by Barrie Cassidy (3/9/12) … “the failure of the richest states to cough up a relative pittance towards trials appears to be the dumbest and meanest act by leading politicians in a very long time”.
The realisation of the NDIS is a HUMAN RIGHT for those people living with a disability. Currently people are caught in a system that responds to crisis, a system that drips out support rather than invests in someone’s future. The implementation of the NDIS will see this practice turned upside down, to a practice of taking a lifelong approach to care and support, a practice that will focus on the person’s ability to make life choices.
How can the Premier possibly not see the benefits in taking a strong stance in creating a system that will focus on ability by providing people with disabilities a life of choice, purpose and meaning, just as he has himself? The NDIS will also nurture and sustain support for families, carers and friendship groups, these communities are critical to improving the lives of people with a disability. Possibility the Premier takes all of this for granted in his own life and therefore, does not see the need for others who are not so fortunate.
Has the Premier not also realised that an investment of this nature will reap long term economic rewards as people with a disability will be able to contribute to community in a real and meaningful way.
Again I strongly stress this is about HUMAN RIGHTS! The NDIS will give all Australians the peace of mind to know that if they have or acquire a disability that leaves them needing daily assistance with everyday life, or if they care for someone who has a disability, that they will be supported. It is therefore, a disgrace that Queensland is not a part of this significant life changing initiative.
