It's not just my opinion. Others are saying it too.Added to that is a strong public perception of Abbott as an unapologetic liar. Someone who can't be trusted. A running tally of his broken promises is being maintained online, for all to see.
His goose is cooked. No one will miss him when he is gone. And thankfully... it won't be long.
Everywhere Abbott looks, things look bad. The budget announcement was a disaster, and their ham-fisted attempts at selling it are just making things worse.
Every day brings another memorable gaffe from the Mad Monk. There was the ridiculous analogy that their budget can be compared to the fire brigade knocking down a few fences to put out a fire, something the cartoonists have loved (see below). And then there was the sleazy wink that went around the world.
Already there is leadership speculation. Coming from friendly corners or the media even.
And the negative stories keep popping up. From the misappropriated 'Entitlements' scandal which Abbott hid from and let blow over. To the on-going ICAC revelations that seem to be getting ever closer to Abbott himself
A growing stench also surrounds Abbott.
The exclusive scholarship received by Abbott's daughter carries many questions. Although the Mad Monk is right to say that families should not be drawn into politics, the case of Abbott's wife and daughters is quite different. Abbott has shamelessly used them to try to negate the issue he clearly has with women. They have been political tools used first by Abbott. He made them fair game.
The real issue though is - should Abbott have declared it. There is excellent analysis on that question on the Independent Australia website. It also raises further questions about personal favours, lobbying, and how they relate to the changes to the government's HELP scheme. The Guardian reports that Abbott denies being lobbied by those representing Whitehouse (the fashion school which provided Frances' very unusual scholarship). But there is no denying that the changes to those who can apply for HELP funding has been expanded in a way that will benefit teaching institutions such as Whitehouse. A very significant potential conflict of interest for the Mad Monk. An interest that was undeclared.
One Term Tony is now in a Terminal decline.
He won't be missed.
